Shopify vs WooCommerce: Which Is Right for Your Irish Online Shop?

Shopify vs WooCommerce: Which Is Right for Your Irish Online Shop?

By Diaz Xavier, Founder, Sevenoways

Quick answer: For most Irish small businesses starting an online shop, Shopify is the better choice — it's faster to launch, needs almost no maintenance, and handles hosting, security and payments for you, from about €36/month. WooCommerce (on WordPress) wins when you need deep customisation, already run a content-heavy WordPress site, or want to avoid platform fees and don't mind the upkeep. Neither is "best" outright — it depends on your shop.

The honest comparison

Shopify WooCommerce
Monthly cost €36–€100+ (plus app fees) Hosting €30–€150 + upkeep
Setup speed Fast — days Slower — needs building
Maintenance Shopify handles it You (or your agency) maintain it
Customisation Good, within limits Almost unlimited
Payments Built-in + Stripe/others Plugins (Stripe, etc.)
Best for Most product businesses Custom needs, content-heavy sites

When Shopify is the right call

  • You want to launch and sell, not manage software
  • You'd rather pay a predictable monthly fee than maintain hosting and plugins
  • You value security and updates being handled for you (no plugin got you hacked at 2am)
  • Your catalogue is standard products — most Irish retail, food, crafts, boutiques

For the majority of Irish SMEs opening a first online shop, this is the sensible default.

When WooCommerce wins

  • You already have a WordPress site with lots of content and want the shop in the same place
  • You need unusual functionality a Shopify app can't provide
  • You want to avoid transaction/platform fees at scale and have the volume to justify the extra maintenance
  • You want total ownership and control of every part of the stack

The trade-off is real, though: WooCommerce means you (or someone you pay) are responsible for hosting, security, updates and backups — forever. That's fine with support in place; it's a liability without it.

The costs nobody mentions (either platform)

  • Payment fees — typically ~1.5–2.9% + a fixed amount per transaction; factor it into margins
  • Apps/plugins — reviews, email, shipping calculators add up quickly on both
  • Product photography and copy — often the real difference between a shop that sells and one that doesn't (our e-commerce cost guide breaks this down)
  • Marketing — "build it and they'll come" fails online; budget for SEO and/or ads from day one

So which should you choose?

Choose Shopify if you want the shortest path to selling with the least ongoing hassle — which is most Irish small businesses. Choose WooCommerce if you have specific customisation needs, an existing WordPress site, or the scale to justify managing it. Still unsure?
